I Say You He Dead!

I have found some of the reactions to Osama bin Laden’s death predictable, and some interesting.  Here’s a story about Pittsburgh Steeler Rashard Mendenhall’s tweets about it on the ESPN web site that’s interesting:

What kind of person celebrates death? It’s amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We’ve only heard one side...” and Mendenhall goes on “I believe in God. I believe we’re ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge. Those who judge others will also be judged themselves. For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn … I ask how would God feel about your heart?”  Uhh Rashard, ever watch the news?  Bin Laden’s only issued about a dozen hateful, threatening messages to America and Europe in the last ten years.  Giving some professional athletes Twitter is like putting a gasoline-soaked t-shirt on a pyromaniac and handing him a box of matches.  But I digress…

Mendenhall is right: we are all His children.  Muslims – from the rabid life-hating jihadists to the peaceable opium poppy farmers of Afghanistan – are all His Children.  But Jesus – contrary to the Pillsbury Dough Boy image many liberal Christians have of him – has a hard side.  He was especially stern with those in leadership positions who cause the sheep to stray…something about millstones, I believe.  I don’t think anyone would argue that bin Laden didn’t lead a lot of sheep astray, besides the minor mischief of masterminding the deaths of thousands.  To their credit, the SEALs out of respect for Islamic custom dispensed with the millstone.  And I’m confident each one will be met by St. Peter when their day of glory arrives with a big hug and “Well done my friend.  High five!  Low five!  Get on in there!  Plenty of Bud Lite on ice inside The Gate.”

It is a sin to judge.  Maybe OBL is in Paradise with those 72 virgins.  But I bet each one of those virgins has a mother-in-law, and at least one’s always visiting!
