Daniel 13-14; 1 John 2

1 John 2:16 “For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life, is not from the Father but is from the world.” I don’t think anyone would disagree that in modern culture we are awash in lust and enticement for the eyes.  Watch any NFL game and sit through all the commercials, and by halftime you can feel like you need to take a long, hot shower and use plenty of Lifebuoy.  Or one of these “situation comedies”, you don’t even need the commercials.  A “pretentious life” may be a more opaque concept.  It is simply an attitude of arrogance or ostentation in one’s state of life.  I remember back in my salad days of being on a modest wage but having to have expensive imported beer in the fridge because “it said the right things about me.”  Actually it was saying I was a knucklehead.  Lord, strengthen me to resist these things of the world that can separate me from You!

GOD’S ANSWER: Everything is beautiful, as that old song says.  I made it, so it is good.  But when you make any of of these beautiful things more important than your relationship with Me,  you are indeed a knucklehead…although still My knucklehead, ya goof.
