Genesis 31-33; Matthew 5

Matthew 5:39 “But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil.  When someone strikes you on your right cheek, offer the other one to him as well.”  Jesus’ words about turning the other cheek are poorly understood by most.  He is not saying we should be doormats, but resolute in our pursuit of justice.  There is a story about Mother Theresa illustrating the difference:  she took a starving child to a bakery and asked the proprietor for bread for the child.  His response was to spit on her.  She calmly replied “Thank you for your gift to me.  Now could we have something for the child?”  She didn’t slink away, or get angry, but was determined to see the right thing done.  Lord Jesus, grant me the grace to have the strength to stand up for what is right, even in the face of scorn and rebuke.

GOD’S ANSWER:  If being My Son’s disciple were easy, everyone would be one.  Don’t be a fair weather follower, a summer soldier.
