Exodus 16-18; Matthew 16

Matthew 16:25-26 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.  What profit would there be for one to gain the world and forfeit his life?”  There are words from Christ that sear the heart.  How is that we live most of our lives focused on things that are ultimately of no importance?  For example, who we elect as the next President of the United States is not important, in the sense that for the individual party affiliation will not be raised as an issue at the particular judgment – although voting for someone supporting immorality might.  How one’s 401-K performed is probably not an issue, although what the proceeds were spent on might.  Two of the most important tools in the Devil’s toolbox are greed (I want to gain the whole world!) and fear (I don’t want to lose the whole world!).  I try to reflect every time I emotional whether I’m embracing greed and/or fear.

GOD’S ANSWER: I don’t expect you to be Buddhists: nothing evil in desire; e.g. the desire to support one’s family, the desire for one’s sports teams to win, the desire that brings men and women together and continues the human race.  It is when these desires create idols that things turn evil.
