Deuteronomy 7-9; Luke 3

Duet. 8:3 “…in order to show you that not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.”

We are most familiar with this great statement as Jesus rebukes Satan when tempted by him in the desert, but we see that Moses said it first.  Moses sets up a warning to the Israelites about the dangers of prosperity with an eloquent reminder of the loving providence of God.  God takes care of those who love Him, even when natural means seem to fail them.  In our modern world with its amazing technology, bounteous food, and dazzling entertainments, it is more tempting than ever to say:

“…It is my own power and the strength of my hand that has obtained for me this wealth.” (Deut. 8:17)

Satan whispers to us how great we are, that we can turn stones into bread, swelling our pride, setting us up for a crash into despair when the storms of life come, as come they must.

GOD’S ANSWER:   Your life is My gift, an open invitation to share in the eternal familial love of the Trinity.  Love cannot be imposed.  Love Me willingly and wholly, or not at all.
