Deuteronomy 25-27; Luke 9

Luke 9:54-55 “When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?”  Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.”

There is a lot of “calling down fire from heaven” going on today.  I saw a cellphone video recently of a woman walking through a Target store, waving her arms and loudly excoriating them for their new transgender restroom policy.  Fire-calling of course is rife in political discourse.  I myself have called fire down from heaven on ISIS, abortionists, pornographers, fellow commuters who drive and text at the same time, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  I believe Jesus gives us straightforward guidance on this.  He didn’t go into a long “why we don’t call down fire from heaven” discourse with the Sons of Thunder; he just gave them a long appraising look, a frown, and a curt “Shut up, let’s move on.”  This ties in nicely with “Love your enemies.”  When I am tempted to call down fire, I remind myself that God is the just Judge who has the ultimate last word, and I leave the justice up to Him.

GOD’S ANSWER:  Yes, leave the fire-calling to Me.  You do not see the big picture – not even a significant part of the small picture, you lovable dope.
