2 Samuel 7-9; John 16

John 16:33 …In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.

As I age and my physical powers wan (and doubtless the mental ones too), and I perceive the world as going to hell in a hand basket, I cling to these words of Jesus like a shipwrecked man to a piece of flotsam.  The “taking courage” part is challenging.  I have grown up in the United States, where to be categorized as “poor” means living like royalty in many other parts of the world.  It perhaps is not great preparation for having courage.  “Trouble” to some of us is the drive-thru ATM machine being down and we have to get out of the car and use the walk-up.  Lord, give me true courage and true appreciation for my existence in Your beautiful Creation and all the blessings you have bestowed on me.

GOD’S ANSWER: Courage is always a gift of participating in My Divine Life, which is heartfelt prayer.  Like Nike says, just do it.
