2 Samuel 19-21; John 20

John 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Have you come to believe because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.”

One of today’s sad trends is people not believing because of the idea that science is rational but religious belief is not.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Belief in God is easily arrived at rationally.  God’s existence or non-existence cannot be proved through the scientific method, but through philosophical inquiry – which is rational – we can come to the conclusion that God exists.  Now the great questions of the heart, such as “Is Jesus who he said he is?” these too can be approached through reason.  Every Christian should read C. S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity”, especially where he asks the question and then explores “Was Jesus a madman, a liar, or exactly who he said he was?”  According to Lewis, it comes down to one of these three; the “Jesus was a great human teacher” argument does not cut it.

I believe a special blessing is reserved for Christian believers today because probably because today more than any time since the Resurrection are there more voices proclaiming against belief.  As the father of the possessed son proclaimed, I proclaim “Yes Lord I believe.  Help me in my unbelief.”

GOD’S ANSWER:  Faith is a gift I freely give.  You just have to ask for it.
