1 Kings 16-18; Acts 6

1 Kings 17:8-9 So the Lord said to him: “Move on to Zarephath in the land of Sidon and stay there.  I have designated a widow there to provide for you.”

What struck me about this is that God’s instructions were a tremendous test of Elijah’s trust .  First, the Sidonians were bitter enemies of the Israelites.  Second, widows were typically not flush with resources; in these ancient societies becoming a widow was a ticket to destitution.  But we can only speculate on Elijah’s frame of mind; if he was bemused, he did not express it.  He just obeyed.

GOD’S ANSWER: Persevere always.  I have the big picture – which you are an important part of – in mind.
